You've got a photo and want to make it look special, lovely by adding your own bokeh to it...There're many bokeh images that can be searched on Google but you want to create your own bokeh and add it to your photo by using Adobe Photoshop. Here there's a problem that you don't know how to create a bokeh. This tutorial will help you know how to create a nice bokeh in Adobe Illustrator and then you can create your own bokeh and add it into your photo by using Adobe Photoshop.
We will use Symbol Sprayer Tool (shortkey Shift + S) to create a lovely heart bokeh as the image below.
Now let's get started!
Open Adobe Illustrator software in your PC and create a new document with any size and solution that you need by pressing File > New or pressing the shortkey Ctrl + N.
Step 1 : Create a dark background.
Select the Rectangle Tool (shortkey M) and draw a rectangle that has colour in black.
Step 2 : Create bokeh shapes.
Select the Ellipse Tool (shortkey L) and draw a circle filled with any colour that you need. Then select the Direct Selection Tool (shortkey A) to choose an anchor. Hold down the Alt key and drag the mouse to change the handle line. Do the same with another anchor to create a heart shape. You can follow the image below.
Duplicate bokeh shape and change its colour to create other bokeh shapes. Select the Selection Tool (shortkey V) to choose our bokeh shape, hold down the Alt key and drag the mouse to duplicate.
Step 3 : Convert bokeh shapes to symbols
Select Windows > Symbol or press the shortkey Shift + Ctrl + F11 to open Symbol toolbox. Select the Selection Tool to choose each bokeh shape and drag it into Symbol toolbox.
Step 4 : Fill the background with symbols.
This is the most important step that makes how your last result looks.
We fill the background with symbols by using the Symbol Sprayer Tool (shortkey Shift + S). From the Symbol toolbox, choose the symbol that you want to fill the background. Double-click the Symbol Sprayer Tool icon to open its toolbox and change the values that you need. Drag the mouse free to anywhere on the background that you want to fill with symbols.
Now all symbols have same size, same transparency, same direct. They looks not good. But don't care about it. There're many tools hidden behind the Symbol Sprayer Tool icon. Keep clicking the Symbol Sprayer Tool icon, you'll see them. Choose each tool and double-click its icon, a new dialog will appear and you can change the values and know how to use it.
For example, select the Symbol Sizer Tool to change the size of symbols. Click on symbols that you need increase their size and hold down the Alt key to decrease the size of symbol instances. Hold down the Shift key to do density-preserving scale.
Select the Symbol Spinner Tool to rotate symbols. Keep clicking on symbol instances, a arrow that appears on it. Drag the mouse to change the direct of arrow to rotate symbols.
Select the Symbol Screener Tool to change the transparency of symbols. Click on symbols that you need change their transparency and hold down the Alt key to decrease transparency of symbol instances.
Step 5 : Repeat step 4
From the Symbol toolbox, choose other symbols and repeat step 4.
Step 6 : Make clipping mask
Duplicate dark background and bring it to front. To do, select the Selection Tool (shortkey V) to choose dark background shape and then press Ctrl + C > Ctrl + F. Right-click on it, go to Arrange > Bring to front (shortkey Shift + Ctrl + ]).
Select the Selection Tool (shortkey V) and drag the mouse to choose all objects. Right-click and go to Make clipping Mask.
Step 7 : Export the image of bokeh
Go to File > Export, a new windows appears. Choose the file type and solution value that you want to save. Press OK to export the image.
Step 8 : Add bokeh image to photo in Adobe Photoshop.
Open bokeh image and the photo that you want to add bokeh image in Adobe Photoshop. Here there's a notice that when you export bokeh image as .PNG in Adobe Illustrator, there're many transparency pixel around the main of image. You can remove them in Adobe Photoshop by going to Image > Trim, select Transparent Pixels, pick all Top, Bottom, Right, Left and then press OK.
Drag bokeh image to your photo. Scale bokeh image to fit with your photo. In Adobe Photoshop, from Layer tab (to show it, press shortkey F7 or go to Windows > Layers), select Blend mode : Screen and change the value of Opacity as you need.
